Types of Braces

Braces are appliances used to straighten teeth as well as to provide sufficient room for teeth that have not as yet emerged. The process is the application of pressure to the teeth over a period of time. This will slowly move the teeth in a specific direction. As the teeth move, the jawbone will adjust accordingly. Braces are used to improve dental alignment and the way the bite fits and to afford a pleasing smile. All braces and wires in our office are individually packed into a sterile package and opened right before placement.

Before prescribing braces, the orthodontist will thoroughly examine the patient using x-rays, photographs and dental impressions to determine the correct diagnosis.

Braces come in different forms:

Traditional Metal

Made from high-grade stainless steel, metal braces are used to straighten teeth using metal brackets and archwires. The elastics used to hold the wire in the braces come in a variety of colors. Today these metal braces are more comfortable than in the past.

Clear (Ceramic)

Made of clear materials, these are less visible and are usually prescribed for older teens and adults who will have cosmetic concerns. They require more hygienic attention. They are larger than traditional braces and are generally used on upper teeth rather than the lower ones.

Clear Aligners/Invisalign

These are a series of removable acrylic trays that gradually move teeth in a better position . They are transparent and are more comfortable since there is no metal to cause abrasions. They can be removed for eating and drinking as well as proper dental hygiene of brushing and flossing.
